Toghers
The association of toghers and early monastic establishments has been noted at
White Island in Co.
Fermanagh,
Glendalough in Co. Wicklow, Clonmacnoise and Lemanaghan in Co. Offaly. The
area around Lemanaghan has produced several trackways dated to the mid 7th AD
when the monasteries in the area would have been in use. The construction of
these walkways in the 6th century was a response to the establishment of
monastic settlements in the area and the need to access them.
