Environmental Management

Bord na Móna Energy Limited is committed to minimising the impact of its activities on the natural environment. Each of its production centres has nominated personnel engaged in actively managing and monitoring the environmental impacts.

The scope of the activities managed include:

  • Emissions to water from an active peat production area of 22 500 ha
  • Discharges to water from workshops, fuel storage areas and hard surfaces
  • Emissions to air from peat production and boiler houses
  • Disposal of both hazardous and non-hazardous waste materials
  • Consumption of energy and water

In accordance with the licence terms granted by the Environmental Protection Agency, Bord na Móna Energy Limited is engaged in a substantial 3-year programme to upgrade the silt entrapment facilities at all of its production centres. This will reduce the level of suspended solids released to adjacent rivers and lakes.

Archaeology

The harvesting of milled peat also exposes structures and objects of archaeological significance in certain peatlands. In order to ensure the proper management of this historical resource, Archaeological Liaison Officers have been nominated at each production centre. These officers ensure that structures are protected until they can be excavated and investigated, and that any objects found are notified and presented to the National Museum in a specified manner.
