History

Energy production has always been an important component of Bord na Móna‘s businesses. Established in 1946, the first developments were based on harvesting sod peat, which was used in power stations and as a household fuel. From the late 1950s onwards, developments were based on milled peat, which is used for the production of electricity and for the manufacture of Bord na Móna Peat Briquettes. The scale of peat harvesting operations expanded in the early 1980s, following increases in the prices of internationally traded fuels.

In 1992 Bord na Móna was a partner in Ireland‘s first commercial wind farm, which was established on one of the company‘s cutaway peatland areas at Bellacorick, Co. Mayo. Bord na Móna Energy Limited was also a partner in Kildare Energy Ltd., which was unsuccessful in its application for permission to develop a 400 MW combined cycle gas turbine power station at Dunstown, Co. Kildare.
