Bord na Móna Energy Limited produces milled peat feedstock which is used to generate electricity in 4 thermal power plants, and also used for the manufacture of Bord na Móna Peat Briquettes. The company is also the majority shareholder in the Bellacorick windfarm, which generates 17 GWh of electricity each year. The total primary energy contribution by Bord na Móna Energy Limited is equivalent to 745,000 tonnes of oil per annum.

Ireland has few indigenous energy resources and, with the growth in economic activity and energy consumption, its dependence on imported energy is increasing rapidly. Ireland‘s annual primary energy consumption is about 14 million tonnes of oil equivalent (mtoe) (Department of Marine, Communications and Natural Resources). Production of energy from native resources is just under 2 mtoe each year. The contribution by Bord na Móna Energy Limited represents 38% of Ireland‘s indigenous energy supply.
