Regional Impact



Bord na Móna Energy Limited has peat harvesting activities at 8 main production centres, located throughout the Irish Midlands and in west Mayo. Most of the regions in which the company operates are not well developed and offer few alternative opportunities. The principal characteristics of these peatland regions include:

  • Poor service and communications infrastructure
  • Agriculturally disadvantaged
  • Little economic or industrial development
  • Low and declining population density
  • Difficult to attract inward investment
  • Out-migration of young people

Bord na Móna Energy Limited has 870 full time workers and 500 part-time or seasonal employees. The total annual wage contribution from the company to the communities is EURO 44 M. The peat supply activities provide a base for an additional 350 employees in power stations and factories.
