Conservation & After Use

Bord na Móna recognises the unique systems which are peatlands.

Bord na Móna owns approximately 7% of the peatlands of Ireland. It has reserves of peat, at current rates of consumption, to last over thirty years and has no plans to expand its acquisition of peatlands for production.

Bord na Móna recognises the importance of peatlands as sites of scientific and archaeological study.
Bord na Móna has a commitment to the long-term planning of its cutaway bogs. Because the peat industry is so central to the economy of the region in which it operates, the economic and social needs of the local communities must also be taken into account, including local employment and the prevention of rural depopulation.

The new landscape which will evolve, after industrial peat production is finished, will be a mosaic, dominated by forestry and grassland, but interwoven with a patchwork of diverse wild habitats.
There is also a commitment to gathering and making available information on all aspects of Bord na Móna‘s impact on the environment and to help improve understanding among the public generally of its role and of the importance of Irish peatlands.

Bord na Móna believes that it understands and respects the resource which it owns, and which it develops to the benefit of its customers, employees and the local and wider community of which it is part.
