Energy and Power Generation

Bord na Mona Energy is responsible for the development of a portfolio of business to provide secure, dependable and sustainable energy and power generation, with renewables at the core. The portfolio will include complimentary wind generation, biomass energy and flexible thermal plants.

Edenderry Power: The comany operates a 128 megawatt peat-fired generation station at Edenderry, Co. Offaly. The plant uses modern fluidised bed boiler technology and achieves a highly efficient rate of energy conversions with consequent reduction of emissions per kilowatt hour generated.

Peat Feedstock: Bord na Mona supplies peat feedstock for the generation of electricity at the ESB peat fired stations at West Offaly and Lough Ree and the company's station at Edenderry.

Co-Fuelling: Bord na Mona is commited to progressing the development of co-fuelling with carbon neutral fuels in the production of electricity in Ireland. The Group has conducted extensive trials with different types of biomass in order to build its knowledge of the operational and economic issues involved.

Wind Energy: Renewable Energy Ireland Ltd. continues to operate a 6.45 megawatt wind farm in Co. Mayo. Bord na Mona owns 88.5% of this company. The wind farm was the first commercial wind farm established in Ireland. The group is planning to develop a 320 megawatt wind farm at Oweninny, also in Co. Mayo. This facility which has full planning permission, would be one of the biggest wind farms in Europe. The group is also evaluating the potential for similar projects on its other landholdings.

Raw Material: Bord na Mona Energy also supplies other companies with peat as raw material for the maunfacture of horticultural products and briquettes.
