Bord na Móna markets a full range of growing media products sold under the Shamrock brand. These include multipurpose composts, gro bags and a range of decorative barks and mulches.

Shamrock professional growing media products are used by commercial growers to produce a range or ornamental and food crops. The products are based on the inherently high quality of Irish peat to which scientifically formulated fertilisers are added to produce excellent growing media.

Bord na Móna Irish peat is utilised in the manufacture of potting soils throughout the world. Irish Peat is recognised for its superior storage and performance characteristics.

The facility accepts organic green waste from gardens and landscape contractors in addition too by-products from the food processing / argriculture sectors.

Kilberry composting facility was opened in 2005 and uses windrow composting to treat a range of organic materials. The site measures 4.2 ha and comprises an enclosed asphalt surface with a leachate collection and recirculation system. After composting the material is incorporated into horticultural products which are packaged on the site.

Welcome to Bord na Móna Horticulture

Bord na Móna Horticulture Ltd. manufactures a range of growing media products for the commercial grower and hobby gardener.

The term growing media includes three principal types of products:

  1. Soil conditioners - Products that are dug or incorporated into soil to improve structure and fertility (eg Peat)
  2. Mulches - Products that are spread on the surface of soils to provide an attractive covering to borders and to suppress weeds (eg Bark)
  3. Potting soils - Products that have all the chemical and physical requirements to grow plants in a container (eg Multipurpose compost)

In total, some 2 million cubic metres of products are sold annually. These are sold worldwide, particularly in Western Europe. Over 90% of output is exported.

High quality sphagnum moss peat is the principal component of the mixes. In the last five years the range of products has been expanded to include bark. This is used as a decorative mulch and also, in composted form, as a potting soil.

Through a deal, concluded in the year 2000, the Shamrock range of growing media products are marketed, worldwide, by the Scotts Company, based at Columbus, Ohio. In addition the business has substantial own-label manufacturing contracts in the UK.
